Chrysler
The Chrysler Corporation was founded by Walter Chrysler, who was a prominent machinist. He purchased the Maxwell Motor Corporation of Detroit and used it as the foundation for his new company. The company quickly earned a reputation for its advanced engineering. Chrysler Corporation expanded in 1928 with the purchase of Dodge. The DeSoto and Plymouth divisions were also created at this time.
Chrysler introduced its revolutionary Airflow in the 1930’s and it was one of the first vehicles to be designed with aerodynamics in mind. The company’s infamous "Hemi" V8 engine made its debut in 1951. By the time 1961 had rolled around Chrysler had downsized its line of brands by dropping the DeSoto nameplate.
In 1998 the German based Daimler-Benz merged with Chrysler to form DiamlerChrysler. However due to Chrysler’s reliance on high powered, non-fuel efficient vehicles the company’s financial situation never stabilized, and Daimler sold Chrysler for a loss to a private equity group in 2007.
