Daihatsu Truck
Daihatsu was formed in 1951 and is based in Japan. The company is well-known for smaller, quirky models and especially small compact cars. Initially, production was exported to Europe but sales success eluded the company throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s; it was with the advent of high gas prices in Europe during the 1980’2 that the brand came into its own and became successful. From 1992, Daihatsu has been distributed in the United States and the brand enjoys a close distributor relationship with Toyota.
The company has a history of producing mini-trucks and pickups which are flexible and highly adaptable to the needs of the owner, who typically would be in the Third World and driving in heavily congested and densely populated urban cities or as a tourist vehicle. More recently the company has emerged as a serious competitor in the commercial light- and medium-duty trucks sector with the Delta (a medium-duty flatbed) and the Gran Max (a light- to medium-duty chassis); the company also produces the compact SUV known as the Terios.
