Renault
Renault is a major French car maker and its core market is in France and Europe though it has a worldwide presence. In 1999, the company entered into an alliance with Nissan of Japan which was an unprecedented technology, design and business sharing deal with significant cross-shareholdings between the two companies (Renault owns 44% of Nissan and Nissan 15% of Renault).
Talks of a similar alliance between Renault and America’s GM foundered after GM insisted on Renault paying a premium to its shareholders. Renault-Nissan are the 4th largest car making enterprise in the world and outside of Europe it has significant marketing and manufacturing operations in South America, Eastern Europe and the Far East (through owning Samsung Motors).
Renault did have a presence in North America in the 1970’s and for a brief time operated a manufacturing plant in Quebec, Canada. The energy crisis of 1973 hit Renault very hard and its presence in North America declined though AMC did have a tie with Renault in the late 1970’s. By the 1980’s Renault had disappeared from the US market entirely.
