Rover
Rover was formed in the late 19th Century in the UKand initially manufactured bicycles and spare parts. In 1904, Rover commenced manufacturing cars and the company continued to develop new models until 1947 when it introduced the classic Land Rover. In 1967, the UK car industry underwent a radical series of shake-ups with Rover being taken over by British Leyland Motor Corporation. This was the first of a series of upheavals which included numerous mergers, spin-offs, privatizations and dormancy.
In 1994, British Aerospace who had acquired Rover in a further series of merger and acquisition deals, sold the company to BMW. This sparked the revival of the Rover brand with the financial backing of BMW who also had a technical tie-in with Honda – this created the impetus for several new models and resurgence in the reliability reputation of the Rover brand which had previously been plagued with reliability issues and poor engineering.
In 2000, BMW sold Rover to Phoenix after it had spun-off several components of the original company including Land Rover and Jaguar (to Ford). In 2005, the company declared insolvency and the rights to the Rover brand were acquired by Ford who subsequently sold them to Tata motors, an Indian car maker. At this time, there are no Rover cars in production and the brand is dormant.
