Volvo Truck
Volvo Truck is the second largest manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks in the world. In the North American market, Volvo bought White in 1980 after it filed for bankruptcy and traded primarily using the brand name, Western Star Trucks. The brand was dropped in 1987 when Volvo the heavy duty truck range from General Motors and began trading as Volvo WhiteGMC though the GMC name was dropped in 1990.
Volvo acquired Renault’s truck division in 2001 and through this international acquisition, Volvo further entrenched itself in the US market through Mack Trucks (then owned by Renault). Such was the dominance of Volvo that to proceed with the acquisition it had to sell-off the Xpeditor range of low-cab-forward models but with its acquisition of UD Nissan Diesel, Volvo now has a complete range of heavy-duty trucks and a global reach.
Volvo produces both Mack Truck and Volvo units in Dublin, Virginia and Macungie, Pennsylvania while an affiliate, Volvo Powertrain produces engines at Hagerstown, Maryland.
