Mercury Truck
Edsel Ford created Mercury in 1939 – Ford Motor Company believed in creating its own brands and models for market which contrasted with its main competitor, General Motors who grew rapidly by acquisition and integration of existing brands into its own stable. Mercury was intended to fill the gap between regular Ford models and the luxury brand, Lincoln and as such Mercury was not intended to produce pickup trucks as this was not the intended target market.
In 1946, Ford commenced producing trucks and pickups under the Mercury badge in Canada. The models were based on existing Ford models (a common strategy for Mercury was to take a Ford model and lower and extend the chassis and design). The Canadian production line produced Ford and Mercury trucks without distinction, the difference in the production runs being the badging and detail which critics claim makes Mercury trucks simply superficial models. Nevertheless, trucks and pickups continued to be manufactured in Canada until 1968 and are considered a rarity and sought after by collectors.
