Lincoln
Lincoln is an American luxury car maker established in 1917 by Henry Leland who named the company after his hero, Abraham Lincoln. The company was bought out by Ford in 1922 amidst financial difficulties and used since that time as the luxury car brand as well as an aircraft engine maker during the War years. The company has the distinction of being the maker of choice for the official state limousines used by the US President.
The 1980’s and 1990’s saw the Town Car as the flagship of the Lincoln range but consumer tastes were changing and the SUV and off-road market evolved and grew, especially with the introduction of the Hummer. In 1998, Lincoln entered the SUV market with the Navigator and achieved phenomenal success with the vehicle; Lincoln dominated the luxury SUV sector and the luxury car market generally in North America on the back of the Navigator success. More recently, Lincoln has suffered from increased competition but Ford has responded to this by cross-group sharing so models are brought to market faster.
