Mazda Truck
Founded in 1920, Mazda was initially a machine tool manufacturer and later produced weapons for the Japanese war effort – vehicles were a spin-off from the war effort and the company commenced vehicle production in 1931 and named the division, Mazda. The company did not formally adopt the name "Mazda" until 1984 but every vehicle they produced carried the badged name. Post-war, the company continued with the development of the Wankel rotary engine in contrast to its competitors – today it is the only major car maker to use this engine type.
The company started marketing to the US in 1970 and was successful until the 1973 oil crisis; this created a change in direction for the company but financial difficulties resulted in a partnership deal with Ford in 1979. This arrangement has continued to this day and has allowed Mazda to use Ford platforms for its range of light-duty pickup trucks such as the 2009 B-Series. Ford denies it is looking to drop the Mazda partnership in the current economic recession though there have been rumors about this.
