Pontiac Truck
General Motors bought the Pontiac brand name in 1909 after the company had been created in 1900 as part of the flurry of acquisitions under the stewardship of William Durant. Pontiac was synonymous with high-performance vehicles and embodied the American muscle-car concept. The name itself is derived from a Native American chief who fought the British in the French and Indian War.
Pontiac as a brand will disappear in 2010 with the restructuring of GM in the wake of the severe recession and bail-outs of GM by the US Government. As such the latest model, the 2010 Pontiac G8 Sports Truck will not be sold in the United States leaving only the Montana, which stopped being manufactured in September 2008 and the less-popular SUV crossover, the Torrent on sale. Currently, Pontiac offers no light truck in its line-up and Saab, the Swedish car maker and a GM subsidiary has assumed this role in the brand line-up.
