Renault
Renault is a French car maker who had a presence in the US car market in the 1970’s. During that decade the company operated a manufacturing plant in Quebec, Canada and was behind models such as the Nash Rambler and had a tie-in with AMC. By the 1980’s, Renault had disappeared from the North American market entirely though the name may be familiar to those with an interest in motor racing.
Renault entered into an unprecedented arrangement with Nissan of Japan in 1999. Renault took a 44% stake in Nissan and the Japanese car maker owns 15% of Renault – this gave access to the newly privatized French company to further expand into new markets (it had been a nationally owned company during the late 1980’s and 1990’s). This alliance created the 4th largest car maker in the world and a similar deal was discussed with General Motors. This deal foundered due to financial disagreements and in the absence of any further acquisitions in the US, do not expect to see Renault vehicles on US roads anytime soon.
