Saturn Truck
General Motors announced the creation of Saturn in 1983; the unique arrangement which was agreed between GM and the Union of Auto Workers allowed for employee participation in the profitability of the new company. Under the labor agreement, Saturn models were produced at the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee and with the launch of the Saturn-S in 1990, the company had an instant success.
Expansion rapidly followed into Canada and by 1997, the company was exporting models to Japan. By 1999, the company had produced its 2 millionth model.
Saturn has always been expected to launch a pickup truck but so far none has been forthcoming and nor is it likely to be so imminently. In 2009, General Motors announced the sale of Saturn to Penske Automotive group which has no car production facilities of its own. Penske is now seeking to partner with a car maker to produce further Saturn models though the current range includes the SUV’s the Saturn Outlook and VUE.
