Subaru Truck
Fuji Heavy Industries and the well-known car-maker, Toyota joined forces to create Subaru. Initially, the company was used to produce scooters and what was known as "zei" class cars – super mini’s and compacts which had a quirky character to them in terms of design.
In 1989, Subaru launched the Legacy on the US market which proved a huge success – this was a family saloon designed to compete with the established Japanese car makers such as Nissan, Suzuki and Toyota. The Legacy was a huge success and radically changed the direction of the Subaru company which had demonstrated its design and engineering could compete effectively in the market. This led directly to the development of a range of pickup trucks but initially the company simply badged an Isuzu Trooper and called it the BigHorn – it was a commercial failure but the company learned from this.
