Yugo
The subcompact Yugo was based on the mechanics of the Fiat 128, under the license from Fiat, and a modified body style. There were a total of 141,511 Yugo cars sold in the US from 1985 to 1991.
The Yugo 45 had an 850ccm 4 cylinder engine which was just less than 50 cubic inches, which made it exempt from California Emission Inspections. The vehicles were renamed Yugo GV for the US market and YugoCars Inc was formed in Sun Valley California.
The first five models of the Yugo sold quickly and the vehicles did very well at the beginning of their run the US. After a while the Yugo started to get a negative reputation and the company kept trying to upgrade their vehicles to appease the American market. However, in 1990 there was a prospect of a recall by the US Environmental Protection Agency of over 126,000 sold in the US due to failure to meet the exhaust emissions standards. This in turn caused Yugo to close its doors for good in 1992.
